The book won critical acclaim, but some haunting questions remain: Why did Canada act as it did in the 1930s and 1940s? How much did Canadians know at the time about the horrors unfolding for the Jews of Europe and where did their information come from? How did they respond, on both public and institutional levels, to the events that marked Hitler’s rise to power? The contributors to this collection turn to the wider public sphere for answers. Their findings reveal that the atrocities taking place in Nazi Germany inspired a range of responses from Canadians, from indifference to outrage to acquiescence. Nazi Germany, Canadian Responses takes up the challenge of creating a mindset of more than seventy years ago, digging deep into archives, records, and testimonies that can offer new interpretations of this dark period. L. Ruth Klein is executive director, National Task Force on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research and national director, League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith Canada. Richard Menkis is an associate professor at the University of British Columbia and founding editor of Canadian Jewish Studies/Etudes juives canadiennes.
